Although Windsor has evolved as one of Sonoma County's most car oriented cities, it is beginning to re-orient toward transit -- at least insofar as the coming SMART train. It is following through on New Urbanist designs originally laid out by Peter Calthorpe over 10 years ago. This is especially apparent adjacent to the site of Windsor's future train station at the intersection of Windsor Road and Windsor River Road. The station itself is to be under construction by summer of 2004. The nearby town green is already in use, and there are New Urbanist mixed use buildings either constructed or under construction on the south and west sides of the green. The builder-architect of the mixed use project is Orrin Thiessen, of Forestville.
